My partner Jenny and I started dating when we were juniors at Sunset High School and are raising our two sons in Cedar Mill, where we grew up. I am a Professor of Education Policy at Pacific University and the program director for our Ph.D. Program in Education and Leadership. I am the only candidate in this race to have held elected office, having served as a School Board Member on the Okemos Public Schools Board of Education and was previously a high school teacher. Throughout my life I have been a volunteer in the community, working over the years at a nursing home, with the Salvation Army to feed people experiencing houselessness, and tutoring local high school students. I am running for State Representative because I have a skill set that will allow me to bring people together and solve our state's larger problems including houselessness, environmental degradation, unaffordable healthcare and prescription drugs, underfunded public education, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • I am running to improve Oregon's public education system, make healthcare affordable and accessible for all, find housing solutions for everyone experiencing houselessness, take bold action to combat climate change, and rebuild our economy from the COVID-19 pandemic. Of all the candidates running for this seat, I have the broadest coalition supporting me, having earned the support of over 30 current or former elected officials, including the district's sitting State Senator Elizabeth Steiner Hayward, the only chamber of commerce to endorse in this race, and six labor unions. This coalition demonstrates my ability to work with all parties to achieve our common goals, creating the robust and sustainable future for Oregon that we all desire.
  • My experience in education will be instrumental in improving Oregon's public education system and raising our second-worst high school graduation rates in the country. As a teacher, school board member, and professor of education policy, I have demonstrated a commitment to progressive values and supporting public education. As a school board member in Okemos Michigan, I stood up for our teacher's health benefits when there were efforts to cut and privatize their health benefits and to privatize our district's school bus drivers and custodial staff, by a statewide group of people including, Betsy Devos. I took on Devos and led the resistance to these efforts of privatization. Instead of harming employees, we improved teacher professional dev
  • I am the only candidate for this seat who grew up in the district and the only candidate who currently lives in Washington County, which is the majority of the district. I went through Beaverton Public Schools, learned to drive on Washington County roads, and learned to play sports in THPRD parks. I know how our community has changed over the past four decades and will be able to anticipate how it will change as our population continues to rapidly increase. This perspective will allow me to truly represent the community and address our needs in both the short and long term.
My research as a professor is on the intersection of education, healthcare, and economic policy. I am incredibly passionate about these policy areas because understanding their relationship is critical for holistic policymaking. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever that we elect government officials who have deep knowledge of these policy areas. When elected I will use this expertise to ensure that everyone regardless of income level or employment status has access to quality healthcare they can afford, to support students who are at risk of following behind after months of distance learning, and to rebuild Oregon's economy by supporting our small businesses and workers.
It is incredibly important for legislators to have previous government experience. I am the only candidate in this race to have held elected office, having served as a school board member during the Great Recession. This experience taught me a tremendous amount about leadership, the relationship between state and local government, and how to find solutions to complicated problems. My experience in local government will allow me to step in and be a successful legislator on day one.
I will model myself after Mitch Greenlick who is retiring at the end of this term. Representative Greenlick is a trained researcher and used his knowledge of evidence and research methods to be an effective data-based policymaker. When elected, I will emulate his commitment to data-based policymaking, progressive values, and healthcare reform.
