Andy Swanson is a Republican political strategist from Des Moines, Iowa. He was the Iowa state director for Rick Perry's 2016 presidential campaign.[1] Previously, Swanson worked as an Iowa field representative for John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign and Tim Pawlenty's 2012 presidential run.[2]

Career

In the 2008 presidential election, Swanson worked as a field representative for John McCain (R). Swanson worked under then-state director Jon Seaton, the senior political advisor for Lindsey Graham's (R-S.C.) 2016 presidential campaign.[3] Swanson again worked under Seaton later in the election, when Swanson was regional coalitions director for Ohio and Pennsylvania while Seaton served as the manager of that region for the campaign.[4][5]

In April 2011, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) hired Swanson as a field representative in his Iowa campaign. For Pawlenty, Swanson worked under Tracie Gibler, Lindsey Graham's 2016 Iowa advisor.[6] Swanson again worked with Jon Seaton, who was Pawlenty's political director in 2012.[7]

In 2014, Swanson worked for the Iowa Senate Majority Fund, where his time again overlapped with Gibler's. In 2014, Swanson also directed the U.S. Senate campaign for Mark Jacobs (R-Iowa), who lost the primary election to Joni Ernst (R-Iowa).[8]

In February 2015, Andy Swanson joined RickPAC, Rick Perry's leadership PAC, as an Iowa advisor.[9] Perry announced his presidential run on June 4, 2015.[10] Of Perry's Iowa hires, The Washington Post noted: "GOP operatives looked favorably on his choice of senior strategist Bob Haus and a team of field staffers who all have presidential caucus experience, know the grassroots and are respected by the activists all these candidates are courting."[11]

Perry suspended his presidential campaign on September 11, 2015.[12]
