What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Environment. Without pristine beaches, lakes, springs and wild spaces, tourism in Florida will suffer, causing a drag on our economy. Also having clean water to drink and air to breathe is great.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
I am cutting my own path. There are no Independent state legislators in the Florida House or Senate. We are in uncharted water but I enjoy being the author of my process.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
Douglas Rushkoff's 'Life Inc.'
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Fairness, open-mindedness, patience, resolve
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I don't come from an extreme ideological standpoint. My ideas form from the ground up, after talking with people most affected by an issue. I take a bottom-up approach as opposed to a top-down one.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
1 - Enact and vote on policy that will help my district 2 - Enact and vote on policy that will help the state 3 - Caucus with both Reps and Dems to find common ground
What legacy would you like to leave?
That you don't need a big party or tons of money to participate in your state government. Right now, ordinary people feel locked out of that process. I would like to prove to the world that a regular guy (or gal) can knock down both the walls of incumbency and of the two-party dictatorship.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
I remember the space shuttle Challenger exploding. I was in the 2nd grade.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I worked flipping houses with my family, starting at 14 years old.
What happened on your most awkward date?
Been married 12 years
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Christmas - Getting to see family members I don't see on a regular basis.
What is your favorite book? Why?
Cormac McCarthy - 'The Road' It portrays human beings' will to survive and how love can pull you through the most extraordinary circumstances.
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My wife and children

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Every state besides Nebraska has two legislative chambers. What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
I'm about to find out.
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
In some cases, yes. However, the US government is supposed to be by, of and for the People. Experience is not a prerequisite. Anyone should be able to serve. They should not have to be lawyers or incumbents.
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Preserving our wild spaces in the face of rampant growth and development.
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
Ideally, one would be a check on the other.
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Absolutely. In order to get legislation passed, you need to build coalitions, even if they are temporary. I believe I will be in a unique position to do this as an Independent.
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Leave it in the hands of an independent body, one not affiliated with a party.
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Yes! Education, Health & Human Services, Commerce, Appropriations
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Again, we are cutting our own path.
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
One step at a time.
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
Yes! I have had people from both parties say that they voted straight party line except for me. I think that says a lot about the kind of inclusive campaign I am running.
