Four of seven seats on the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District board of trustees were up for by-district general election on May 6, 2017. Orlando “Papas” López defeated Chon Lopez Jr. in the race for Place 4. M.L. Garcia defeated Mario Silva for the Place 5 seat. Challenger Victor Rosas defeated incumbent Oscar Medrano in Place 6. In Place 7, incumbent Angel Mendez defeated Joe González in the race.[1][2]

Angel Mendez ran against two challengers, Esteban Rodriguez and Gilbert Weaver, and incumbent Julian Huerta. He won election on May 10, 2014.

Issues in the district
Superintendent suspension
After evaluating the superintendent on a monthly basis since December 2012, Board President Yliana González called for superintendent Antonio G. Limón to be placed on suspension in May 2013.[4] As of December 2013, over $6,000 had been spent in an investigation of the superintendent regarding mismanagement. Ismael S. Cantú is serving as interim superintendent pending the investigation.[5]
