During the HB-2 fight, people stood for me and my community - non transgender people. I came out in a very different time when most people would not have cared. But as my struggle became theirs, and as we fought together and came to know each other, their struggles also became mine. And those are the issues on which my campaign is based.

Healthcare accessibility, educational parity and economic & social justice are extremely important to me, because they are injustices other people face. As one who has personally felt the sting of injustice and discrimination, I am moved by passion and compassion.....to fight injustice everywhere I see it.

To that end, I have served as a Precinct Chair, a member of the State Executive Committee of the NCDP and on the Platform and Resolutions Committee - working to make North Carolina a better place for all citizens, not just some.

  • I will fight to pass Medicaid expansion to North Carolina, delivering care to 600,000 citizens who lack care, while helping to keep rural hospitals and clinics open.
  • As borne out in the Leandro case, education is woefully underfunded in this state. I would work to increase this funding, beginning with a return to pre-Lottery funding levels, adjusted for inflation - so that Lottery funds then are a true supplement to educational funding, as the voters intended when they approved the Lottery..
  • We must restore democracy to NC.. Extreme partisan gerrymandering deprives citizens of the mmost impportant tool of democracy - the ability to hold elected officials accountable.. When elected, I will work to create a non-partisan independent redistricting committee.
Economic opportunity for all citizens, regardless of where they live in our state. This includes expanding rural broadband, so that economic opportunity and development will come to areas they currently don't. It also includes a Living Wage with an annual increase indexed to the rate of inflation.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. She stands for what is right, even if it is not popular, and she fights for what she believes....and is not afraid to challenge authority and leadership when she knows she is right.
Honesty, integrity and a passion for justice and a strong desire to serve the citizens. To never forget we are there to serve the people, not the other way around.
As one who has personally felt the sting of injustice and discrimination, I recognize it when I see it.....and I am driven by passion and compassion to fight it wherever I see it.
Coat Of Many Colors, by Dolly Parton - mainly because I got thinking about how, for so many these days, it seems...all that glitters is gold. Her song is a message I believe we as a people need to hear again.
Right now, in light of the budget impasse in our State, the most important difference is the existence of rules that require 24 hour advance notice of any votes to be taken in the Senate. This does not exist in the House, leading to the fiasco on 9/11/199 when three fifths of only 58 percent of that Chamber (barely a quorum) overrode Gov. Cooper's veto.

The same strategy cannot be employed in the Senate.
Sometimes, this has the reverse effect people might think. I think it is better if politicians are not elected when they have already been influenced by special interests.
The NC Constitution calls for three co-equal branches of government. I'd like to see that restored, along with the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect which has eroded over the last decade in NC.
