Education
Dempsey received her B.S. degree from San Diego State University in 1990 and her J.D. degree from the University of Florida in 1993. She later returned to school and earned her M.A. degree from Florida State University in 2003.[1]
Career
Dempsey began her career in March of 1994 as an assistant state attorney in the Ninth Judicial Circuit. In December of 1997, she became Senior Attorney of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. She held that position until June of 2000, when she took the office of Senior Assistant General Counsel for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. She was then appointed to the circuit court in November of 2005.[1]
Public reprimand
Dempsey was reprimanded by the Florida Supreme Court for using misleading materials in her campaign for election to the court. In 2008 she ran for election to the Second Circuit, which she had been appointed to by Governor Jeb Bush in 2005. In a campaign video posted to YouTube, Dempsey urged voters to "re-elect" her. She also indicated in a mailing that she had 20 years of legal experience, though she was only admitted to the Florida Bar 14 years before the election.[2][5]
The finding read in part: "the misleading information contained within Judge Dempsey's campaign materials was placed within the materials deliberately and was done for the purpose of bolstering her own experience and credibility to the voting public. Without a doubt, Judge Dempsey's conduct was wholly inappropriate."[6]
