Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Republican. Incumbent Susan Brooks (R) defeated Angela Demaree (D) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Brooks withdrew from the race on July 15, 2016, in order to run for governor of Indiana following a ballot vacancy. Brooks was not chosen to fill that vacancy, prompting her to once again seek re-election to her House seat. Republican committee members decided on August 13 to reinstate Brooks on the ballot.[2] Brooks defeated Mike Campbell and Stephen MacKenzie in the Republican primary, while Demaree defeated Allen Davidson to win the Democratic nomination. The primary elections took place on May 3, 2016.[1][3][4]

Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Demaree's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Jobs and the Economy: Angela believes in economic policies that empower the middle class, support local businesses, encourage the entrepreneurial spirit and provide a fair and living wage. Having worked as a veterinarian in private practice, Angela knows the challenges small businesses face. She’ll work to support Indiana businesses with stronger schools, better workforce development, and a fair tax code that rewards hard work.
  • Healthcare: High quality, affordable health care should be available to everyone. Angela looks to build upon and improve the Affordable Care Act in order to ensure every American has access to high quality health care and affordable health insurance.
  • Agriculture: As a sixth generation Hoosier, Angela understands the importance of farmers and agriculture to Indiana’s economy. Her great grandfather was a hog farmer, had a small dairy herd and assisted other farmers throughout Indiana. She will work in Congress for common sense agricultural policies, making sure farming remains a viable career for generations to come.
  • Budget: Sequestration and eliminating government agencies is NOT the answer to balancing the budget. We need to invest in our communities and our infrastructure with programs and policies that yield a good return on investment while at the same time saving taxpayer dollars and decreasing the budget deficit.
  • Civil Rights: Simply put, every Hoosier deserves equal treatment under the law. Protections should not be limited by a person’s race, disability, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Angela believes that nobody should be left behind in our fight for justice and equality.
