In 2018, I ran for the Kansas State House of Representatives in District 14. It was based on the need to be represented by someone who listened to constituents and understood the priorities of the people I see around my neighborhood, in our schools, and throughout our community. While we did not pull off a victory in 2018, we were successful in many ways. We had engaging conversations throughout the community and across party lines, gave people hope, activated young people, and increased voter turnout. Many of us realized we had many more similarities than differences. Because of these connections I made with the help of my team, we came within 175 votes of winning. We feel strongly we can gain those votes and more by advocating for our public schools, affordable healthcare, and regaining the trust of the people. Through my career and in my experience as a businesswoman, I've honed the skills to negotiate effectively, to work with all personalities, and how to find "win-win" solutions to the most challenging of problems. I would like to bring these strengths to Topeka as KS District 14's Representative.
  • Protect Public Schools
  • Work to Lower Healthcare Costs
  • Return Trust and Transparency to Government Office
As someone who grew up here, and am a Realtor in the Kansas City area, I can attest to the fact that many people move here (or back here) for our great public schools. Our schools are the backbone of our economy here, creating an educated workforce, a steady housing market, and a safe community. This attracts businesses to the area, which in turn attracts top talent to move here and establish roots.
Just Mercy - It changed my perception of our criminal justice system, particularly involving systemic racism and juveniles.

Candidate Connection

Angela Justus Schweller completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Justus Schweller's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Proper funding for our public schools; Investment in infrastructure; Responsible budgets

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Adequate funding for public education is a strong point for me. I grew up in Johnson County, attending public schools from kindergarten to getting my Bachelor's Degree at the University of Kansas. I'm now raising my family here, where my two kids attend the Olathe Public Schools. As a realtor, I realize that this is our main attraction here, and what pushes our economy. To neglect our schools would do great harm to our state.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

While out canvassing, people express they want someone trustworthy and honest, and who will work across party lines. I am that person.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

In real estate, I work with all personality types, in high-emotion settings. It is imperative to work with the other side in order to come together and get the transaction closed, for everyone's common interests. This quality of working in a "win-win" situation will be beneficial to help put an end to the divisiveness going on in our legislature.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

My first job was at a dry cleaners where I made a "training wage" of $4 an hour!

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

I do think it's important to build relationships with other legislators. The more communication going on, the more likely to come to common ground.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

I think our districting should be done by an independent, non-partisan group.
