I am Angela Lancelin. I earned my law degree from Texas Southern University. My career began in 1992, and in 1995 I joined the Texas Attorney General's Office. As a public servant I am committed to protecting the safety and rights of all the residents of Harris County, by enforcing the laws enacted to protect them.
Equal protection under the law for all litigants.
I remember often the sacrifices my mother made for me and my sisters. My mother was a single parent and I always remember her strength and courage. Our mother worked at a county hospital for 40 years serving her community. That meant we had to ride the metro bus to and from school. At the time in the early 80's we were called latch key kids. From that experience we learned valuable life lessons. Most of all we all learned to appreciate what it took for our mother to manage a job, a household and the three of us. After I became a parent, childhood memories of lessons taught and learned from my mother serve me well to this day.
In this position you must be relatable, having the ability to listen with patience to understand the litigant's circumstances in order to ensure a fair outcome. Also, you have to truly believe in the legal process when enforcing the laws and rights on behalf of the people you are entrusted to protect.
My legal career has been devoted to public service for more than 27 years. I have the distinct ability to relate and adapt to different fact patterns having managed large dockets on a daily basis. This experience alone has allowed me to serve the residents of Harris County with dignity and respect. It also illustrates my ability to apply the laws of the State of Texas enacted to protect the parents and children in Harris County.
The ability to apply the law without substituting personal beliefs or bias.
As a mother I hope to raise a good citizen that contributes to his community. Professionally I would like my dedication to public service to show my humanity and belief in our legal system.
The actual first historical event I remember would be the Richard Nixon impeachment hearings. I was seven years old at the time.
My very first job was at a flower shop during the summer of 1983. I worked at The Grove outdoors and loved to just show up and see what new flowers were brought in each day. I learned to create arrangements for customers a talent few people know I have.
Phillpa Gregorys Bolen Trilogy. I was a history major and enjoy period pieces.
Being a single parent has presented many obstacles but like my mother I never give up.
The family Courts now have a pilot program to assist pro se litigants appearing in the 245th District Court. The program services are being provided by the Harris County Domestic Relations Office. Litigants can find the form on the Court's web site. The Domestic Relations Office will provide information to help understand, comply with or enforcing parental duties and obligations. The service does not provide direct representation to either party or the children involved and therefore does not create an attorney client relationship.
I believe in the laws and statutes enacted by the state of Texas. The law has to be followed regardless of any element of emotion or personal beliefs. It is as equally important for all litigants to have fair and reasonable access to the courts.
Empathy is an important quality for a judge. Presiding on the bench does not mean putting people in their place. A jurist must have the compassion to listen to the needs of others.
My original concern with this Court related to the practice of limiting parties' appearance by zoom only. This procedural requirement negatively impacted lower income litigants if they were unable to make an appearance via zoom due to the lack of internet, cell phone or a tablet. Additionally pro se litigants often had cases dismissed because the proper forms were not in order. Fortunately, this Court is now participating in a pilot program called, Review Services by the Harris County Domestic Relations Office to assist pro se litigants.
Previous experience in government or politics are important if the record reflects a positive result in carrying out your duties and responsibilities.
My biggest concern relates to voting rights. The requirements for requesting a ballot by mail are very confusing and leave a large number of seniors, without the ability to exercise their right to vote.
The greatest opportunity in for the legal system would allow residence to have the ability to vote without being harassed at the polls.
