Angelica Allen-McMillan
Angelica Allen-McMillan was the acting New Jersey Commissioner of Education. She assumed office on October 20, 2020. She left office on February 1, 2024.
Governor Phil Murphy (D) appointed Allen-McMillan as New Jersey commissioner of education on October 20, 2020.[1]
Biography
Allen-McMillan earned a bachelor's degree in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University. She also earned a master's and a doctorate degree in education, leadership, management, and policy from Seton Hall University.[1] Allen McMillan's career experience includes working as the interim executive county superintendent for Morris County, as the assistant superintendent for secondary education for the Newark Public Schools system, and as assistant superintendent for curriculum & instructions in the Irvington School District.[1]

Allen-McMillan was nominated to serve as acting commissioner of education by Gov. Phil Murphy (D) on October 20, 2020. She succeeded interim commissioner Kevin Dehmer, who had served since the resignation of Lamont Repollet.[1]
About the office
The New Jersey Commissioner of Education is the chief executive school officer of New Jersey and oversees all public schools. Additionally, the commissioner serves as secretary to the state Board of Education, develops code proposals, apportions state aid to local districts, and conducts statewide tests.[2]
