|As a community leader, Angelina is concerned about the impacts school closures have on students, teachers, and neighborhoods. This not only affects the school that has closed, but the schools receiving new students. She believes part of good stewardship includes exhausting all resources and providing creative solutions to complex challenges. “In order to improve LISD, there must be accountability and advocacy that benefits all children”.
A graduate of Lubbock High School class of ’94 and Lubbock Christian University, she holds a master’s degree in human services and specializes in the psychology of childhood trauma and mental health. Angelina is the mother of three children, all of whom have benefitted from education in Lubbock public schools. Her youngest son currently attends Coronado High School as a sophomore.- Following the Dupre closure, I felt called to act. I am concerned about the impacts school closures have on students, teachers, and neighborhoods. This not only affects the school that has closed, but the schools receiving new students. I believe part of good stewardship includes exhausting all resources and providing creative solutions to complex challenges. To improve LISD there must be accountability and advocacy that benefits all children. I believe the best way to change our future is to start now through the empowerment of teachers and families to enable the future of our children.
- supporting teachers and actively seeking out their expertise. They are the backbone of the schools and frontline workers for education. Knowing their experiences and ideas will help me get them the tools they need to create success in the classroom. We are at risk of losing our best teachers. Not only do we need to keep our teachers from leaving, but more than that, we need them to feel valued as central and essential to success. They have real ideas to help solve educational challenges.
- Prevent school closures: Making such consequential decisions such as closing schools without adequate consultation with stakeholders will not happen on my watch. I understand that as a school district and city that “we are all in this together”. Strong schools build strong communities.
I would like to advocate for the connection of community and schools to help initiate community support through the collaboration of resources for all Lubbock school districts. I would like to see the support of teachers, students, and parents through the resources provided helping mitigate stressors that will enable teachers to focus on their intended goal which is to provide a well balance education.
A good leader is one who is capable to take decisions, determined to work for the betterment of community, has the willingness to manage and rectify issues and importantly stand up for what is right. There should be no worry about position, power, and authority. There should always be goal to work towards growth of the community and value those we serve.
