Campaign themes

2016

Espinoza's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

  • Environment: Colorado, home to unparalleled environmental beauty is also home to NIST, NOAA, and NCAR where some of the world’s top climate scientists work. There is no doubt that we must act decisively to protect the environment that sustains us. We must protect our water resources and forest health and help our communities prepare for and recover from flood and fire events.
  • Clean energy: According to the Solutions Project out of Stanford University, Colorado can get to 100% renewable energy by 2050. The obstacles are not technical -- they are political. I will work to implement the Colorado Clean Energy Plan, double our renewable energy standard in the near term, and set measurable, achievable goals in the State’s Climate Action Plan that will move us steadily toward 100% by 2050 or sooner.
  • Fracking: I believe fossils fuels belong in the ground. I testified on behalf of Rep Mike Foote's bill to empower communities to regulate fracking. I have also signed and have publicly supported the initiatives to empower communities to ban fracking and to protect schools and residences statewide with a no fracking zone. I will stand up to the powerful oil and gas lobby and fight for effective regulations to protect our health, our air and our water. Ultimately, I believe we must promote clean energy so that fracking becomes financially unattractive.
  • Gun safety: I am endorsed by Colorado Ceasefire because I have pledged to uphold Colorado's common sense gun safety laws. These include universal background checks, a ban on high capacity magazines and a requirement that domestic abusers relinquish their firearms. In Colorado we’ve suffered through Columbine and Aurora. Nationally we've suffered through Newtown and most recently Orlando, Florida. If elected, one of my first bills will be to a ban the sale of weapons of war like the assault rifle used by the Orlando gunman. I know this a challenging issue, but it’s time to have the hard conversation in Colorado about what more we must do to prevent such shattering loss of life. I’m ready to listen and to act.[1]
