Anna Banowsky was born in Norman, Oklahoma and raised in Redmond, Washington, and is the daughter of a lawyer and a schoolteacher. She is currently a graduate student and teaching assistant at the University of Iowa and a homeowner in the city of Washington, Iowa.

While studying to earn her bachelor's degree in political science at the University of Oklahoma, Anna developed a passion for public policy, law, and foreign affairs and became interested in serving in government.

Teaching a course each semester has allowed Anna to see the impact of Iowa’s K-12 education on students seeking higher education. Anna would like to ensure that all Iowa students have access to quality public education, from preschool to college and beyond.

Anna hopes to support policies that keep Iowa a welcoming state with opportunity for future generations. She hopes to be a representative who shows up for the people in her district and supports the rights of Iowans.
  • As a teaching assistant at the University of Iowa, Anna has worked with students entering higher education from Iowa's K-12 school systems. Many of her students have mentioned feeling that they were not given the tools they need in order to succeed. Anna believes that Iowa needs to be a place that prioritizes public education, as a properly funded school system is a vital component to a functioning society. All of Iowa's students deserve to have access to a quality education, no matter their background. As a representative, Anna Banowsky will vote to ensure that public dollars stay in public schools and that students are given the opportunities to learn according to their abilities.
  • One of the things that first drew Anna to the town of Washington was the vibrancy of the downtown area. It was apparent from the number of shops and restaurants that this town was full of opportunity. Washington is able to be a place of opportunity because of the community--it is a town that people want to live in, whether they were raised here or found community here later in life. Anna Banowsky wants to ensure that all of District 92 is a place of opportunity for everyone. As a representative, she will vote to make sure that housing remains affordable in order to attract more people to the communities that make up this district and to protect the small businesses that make this opportunity possible.
  • Reproductive rights are vital, as the choice of if, when, and how to become a parent is a hugely personal choice--and a choice that is best kept between the individual and a healthcare provider. Over the past several years we have seen Republican-controlled state legislatures pass total bans on abortion and restrict access to contraceptives. Anna Banowsky does not believe that these restrictions are what's best for Iowa, nor do they reflect the opinions of the Iowans she knows. In rural areas like District 92, these restrictions could mean healthcare providers leave the community, causing further disparity in healthcare access. As a representative, Anna Banowsky will vote to protect reproductive rights.
Anna is passionate about fully funding our public schools, promoting investment in mental health education and adequate mental health services, and ensuring reproductive health care for all Iowans.
Elected officials should maintain contact with their constituents to ensure that they are familiar with the issues faced by the people in their district. Elected officials cannot be experts on everything, which is why it’s important to keep in touch with the community that they are serving in order to legislate based on the actual needs of their constituents.
When I was 16, I worked in the concession stand of a movie theater for about eight months. It was a lot of fun to talk to customers about the movies they were seeing. Having this job while attending high school taught me about the importance of balancing multiple schedules at once.
There are several initiatives I would like to introduce. One in particular would be giving Iowans the right to repair items they’ve purchased, whether it's farm equipment—such as tractors—or electronics—such as computers, phones, or printers—without voiding the warranty or inviting fines and/or lawsuits. Once someone’s purchased something, it ought to be theirs to do whatever they want with it—Iowans need to be able to make their possessions work for them, rather than being required to purchase specific parts from the manufacturer.
So far, I have been endorsed by the Iowa AFL-CIO, Run for Something, Advance Native Political Leadership, and Iowa State Education Association (ISEA).
