Anthany Beatty, Sr.
Anthany Beatty, Sr. was a 2014 candidate for mayor of Lexington, Kentucky. Beatty was previously the Chief of Police of Lexington.[1]
Biography
Beatty holds a B.S. in Police Administration from Eastern Kentucky University and an M.S. in Public Administration from Kentucky State University. His professional experience includes working as a police officer, as the Chief of Police of Lexington and as the Assistant Vice President of Campus Services and Public Safety at the University of Kentucky.[1]
Campaign themes
2014
Urban development
Beatty has been highly critical of Lexington Mayor Jim Gray's downtown revitalization efforts, arguing that they have come at the expense of Lexington's neighborhoods and surrounding areas. On his campaign website, he stated:
- Excerpt: "As I began exploring the mayoral candidacy, the one thing I heard loud and clear was, Jim Gray is focusing only on downtown [...] Lexington residents and businesses in the suburban, rural, and inner-urban areas felt neglected. I was a police officer for 35 years, I know what it means to be dedicated and committed to serving All of Lexington-Fayette County."[2]
Public safety
On his campaign website, Beatty described his approach to public safety as follows:[2]
- Excerpt: "I would put police cars back on the streets 24/7 (24 hours a day/7 days a week). Police cars are a necessary tool for enforcing the law. Allow officers to drive vehicles while off duty for omni presence throughout the city, and in our neighborhoods. This will enable a rapid response to calls, and deter crime. I would review staffing numbers and staffing patterns, and make necessary changes. We have fewer sworn police officers today than we had in 2007, yet Lexington’s population continues to increase. I would encourage and enhance neighborhood and community relationships between residents and officers. We must work together to ensure public safety for all, arrest crime frequencies, and seek early intervention methodologies before crime is even an issue. (i.e.; build strong collaborative relationships with neighborhood families and residents, social-service providers, educators, business owners, and faith communities). I would reinvigorate police units such as; CLEAR, Traffic / SEU, Mounted Patrol, DARE, PAL, etc. I would review, enhance, and implement best practices for Fire, EMS, Corrections, E911, DEEM, Code Enforcement and other public safety providers. Public safety providers are like a family system ‘what effects one affects all’. I would increase resources and deployment of tactical police strategies that provide a strong-hold on maximizing public safety for the entire city."
