Anthony Albanese
Anthony Albanese is the former acting superintendent of financial services for New York. He assumed the duties of superintendent when former Superintendent Benjamin Lawsky resigned in June 2015. He stepped down when Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) appointed Maria Vullo, the permanent replacement for Lawsky.[1][2]
Biography
When the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYSDFS) was created in 2011, Albanese began working as the chief of staff to the inaugural commissioner, Benjamin Lawsky.
As chief of staff, Albanese played an important role in negotiating the bank enforcement actions taken by the NYSDFS in its first years. This included negotiating a major settlement in which the French bank BNP Paribas agreed to plead guilty to criminal charges and pay an $8.9 billion penalty for illegally transferring money on behalf of countries that had been blacklisted by the United States.[1]
Prior to joining the NYSDFS, Albanese was a partner at the Weil, Gotshal & Manges law firm.[1]
Political career
New York superintendent of financial services (2015-2016)
Albanese began serving as the acting New York superintendent of financial services in June 2015, after Benjamin Lawsky resigned. Albanese previously served as Lawsky's chief of staff. Before his resignation, Lawsky sent NYSDFS staff a memo praising Albanese's work with the Department and expressing confidence that he would "continue all of the important initiatives... under way while also continuing to be a smart, modern, and forward-thinking prudential regulator."
Albanese remained in the position until Governor Cuomo appointed Maria Vullo in January 2016.[1][3]
