Anthony C. Edwards was a judge for the Superior Court of Trinity County in California. He retired in 2012. On January 2, 2013, Judge Elizabeth W. Johnson filled the vacancy resulting from Edwards' retirement.[1][2]

2012 election

Edwards ran for re-election to the superior court in 2012. As an unopposed incumbent, his name did not appear on the ballot. After the primary election, Edwards was automatically re-elected.[3]

Judicial misconduct

Judge Edwards was publicly admonished by the California Commission on Judicial Performance for various infractions on April 12, 2010.[4] Among other things, Edwards was chastised for taking courtroom staff on an extended lunch, which left the courthouse closed during business hours. When questioned, Edwards responded in writing saying, "The delay was unintentional but it doesn't really matter because I can take an employee to lunch, even an extended lunch, because I am the employer and I can do that."[5][6] He was also taken to task for arraigning a close family friend, and then hugging her in the jury box in full view of an audience. The Commission said that his conduct "reflects a disregard of the court's obligation to the public, undermines confidence in the integrity of the judiciary, and creates the appearance of favoritism."[5] According to Edwards' attorney, the judge does not feel that his actions warranted public admonishment.
