|I want to make our community colleges places of opportunity. Whether your goal is to train for a vocational opportunity and enter the workforce immediately after community college, or to transfer to a 4-year university or professional school, there needs to clear Pathways for those things.
Although my personal higher education path began at San Jose City College and will soon be finished with law school, I had to figure everything out myself on how to transfer to Chico State, and then get into law school after that. My plan is to ensure that current and future students have the same opportunities I did is to revive the Pathway to Law program at both of our campuses, in which students earn an Associate of Arts in Legal Studies with an ABA accredited Paralegal Certificate, and then transfer to a similar program at a 4-year university or begin law school at a Cal Bar accredited local school directly after community college.
Our community colleges need to reach out to high school juniors and seniors, and especially high academic performers, so they are aware of how beginning their higher education at a community college could benefit them. I chose to enroll at San Jose City College the fall after graduating from San Jose High, over starting as a freshman at Chico State, and I am so glad that I did.
