Candidate Connection

Anthony Mills completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Mills' responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Reduce the cost to run for Congress. - Reduce the Federal Budget. - Scrutinize the Internal Revenue Service which is out-of-control.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

The lack of comprehension that the World's dis-privileged cannot all emigrate to North America. - What should be done is that the United States and Canada export their economic success as an example. - There is little knowledge of the Peace Corp that could be a vital segment of this plan.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

This is a question that I was asked a few weeks ago at the Saturday Vallejo Farmer's Market. - My answer to that is: Heros and idols are for at best adolescents not adults. - When I was an adolescent my last hero was the heavy weight fighter Muhammad Ali. I knew that I was taken by his hypnotic presence and pulled away from it. - And look at this last years, totally incapacitated. - Heros and idols are not for adults.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

Citizen Kane.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

That she or he has a back bone and does not join the bandwagon not matter how enticing it may be when she or he should know better. That she or he is able to resist the irresistible influence - the pull - of something that is of a detriment to the City, the County, the Stated and Country in the long run though not obvious at first.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

That I could distinguish between what is good and what is not. That I could level with the Electorate about difficult decisions such as the Annual Deficit and the National Debt. If these two items are not addressed and dealt with, the World's entire financial stability - what stability there is - will collapse. - It is a numerical certainty that if the Annual Deficit continues at 985 billion dollars per annum; the entire system is doomed.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

First: to be level with the Electorate. Second: to understand, address and propose what to do. Third: To be as open with the electorate, and, despite the chaos and toxicity that prevails, be positive.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I am not elected hence to answer that question would be the very definition of presumption.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

When the Russians tanks rumbled into Budapest Hungary; third week of November 1956. I was five years old. - My mother being native of Hungary; she and her fellow compatriots went ballistic that the Eisenhower Administration Did Nothing. My father was a Pentagon motor pool Sergeant. When he drove my mother to the Hungarian Consulate located at Ambassador Row, north west Washington D.C. as a display of solidarity for the Hungarian Freedom Fighters, he placed himself in jeopardy with the Government. - The next momentous event that I recall took place eleven months later when the Soviets launched Sputnik. - I was six years old at the time.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

My very first job was when I was eight years old during the summer of 1960. I was a farm hand at a town - I do not wish to name it as I do not want people to disturb this pastoral village - located in Swabanland Germany. - Both of my parents were fluent in German - two dialects - hence it took me about three weeks to express myself. By the end of the summer my sisters and I were fluent. - I shoved goat, cow and horse manure, and attended to a very large mare. - That summer produced among the fondest memories that I have had. Come harvest time August - September; it was an entire family affair.

What happened on your most awkward date?

Here is one example: I agreed to meet a girl at the local Marina. She arrives and informs me that her boy friend is to arrive soon. - I said, "Good. I want to meet him." His name was Marcie. - To make a long story short, Marcie and I became friends then and there as we went to the Marina bar counter and had a libation. The girl - her sister arrived - were livid as Marcie and I conversed in Spanish.

What is your favorite book? Why?

I have written several books: Drake's Bay - He Was A Survivor - Subic Bay - The Last American Colony - Jack Liddle - positive - these are all my favorite books.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

A political entity that arrives during time of crisis and advises the besieged leadership council.

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

My piano.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

I have sung semi-professionally since the late nineteen fifties. - My last performance is when I had to sing - without notice and practice - at a friends funeral. I performed the songs: Faith Of Our Fathers - How Great Thou Art - Steel Away - Song of Saint Francis. My voice range is baritone. - When I was a youngster in Germany, I was a boy soprano who performed all over Swabenland. The choir made a recording that I have to this day. It was recorded during the spring of 1962.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Myself.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

That favors the profession and livelihood of the district instead of mixing city with the rural agriculture production.

What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?

The Congress - lower House - determines what the Annual Budget is and how the allotted finance is spent.

Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?

Indeed. - I am not a new comer to politics. - My father was a Home Owners President (College Park, Vallejo, California) and I was his secretary during the years of 1968-1973. - I have College degrees in Politics and Economics.

What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?

To remain financially afloat. To regain our position of International Leadership instead of being part of the collegiality of the World that is fast drifting out of control to utter chaos. - For instance; it is well known that the United States National Debt is 21 trillion dollars, with an Annual Deficit of 985 billion dollars. We borrow finance from China, Japan and Brazil (and other Countries) ; all of these countries operate with an insolvent financial status. - Other countries see how the United States borrows what it cannot repay and take the cue; if the United States can borrow money indiscriminately, why cannot we?

If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?

House Ways and Means Committee. Armed Services Committee. Maritime Committiee since I have 40 years as a Merchant Mariner

Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?

I do, though I would not object to a four year term.

What are your thoughts on term limits?

Sad to say that it seems to be necessary. - If the application cost and the Candidate Profile and Statements were not sky high, there would be more qualified people who would enter the political arena. - I would like to see the first Presidential term of six years and the second term four years.

If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?

Certainly. - On maritime issues and expenditure issues.

Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?

Adam Clayton Powell - Margaret Chase Smith - David Treen -

Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

How the average Citizen is tried of the elected who serve themselves. How the elected ramble on and on about the political opposite - partisan bickering - and they are the victims of this contention.
