Appeals court judges square off in Arkansas Supreme Court race

Little Rock, Arkansas: Two appeals court judges will face each other in a race for a position on the Arkansas Supreme Court in the 2012 primary election. The seat formerly belonged to Justice Jim Gunter, who was elected to an eight-year term in 2004 but announced that he did not intend to seek re-election to his position this year. The Supreme Court race is the only statewide race on the ballot in the Arkansas primary.[1]
Judge Josephine Hart of Mountain View, Arkansas, was elected to the Arkansas Court of Appeals in 1998. She has also clerked for Arkansas Supreme Court Justice Frank Holt and practiced law in Batesville, Arkansas.[1] Judge Hart retired a full colonel from the U.S. Army Reserve JAG Corps. She announced her intention to compete for the vacant seat on the state's highest court in December 2011.[2]
Judge Raymond Abramson of Holly Grove, Arkansas, has served on the Arkansas Court of Appeals since his appointment by Governor Mike Beebe in 2010.[1] He is not eligible to run for re-election to his current seat, so he announced his candidacy for the vacancy on the state Supreme Court in May 2011.[2] Judge Abramson has been an attorney for over 30 years, and during his career has been a city attorney, a public defender, and a municipal court judge.[1]
The Arkansas primary will take place on May 22, 2012.[2]
