President Joe Biden (D) announced California Attorney General Xavier Becerra (D) as his nominee for secretary of health and human services on December 7, 2020.[1] The Senate confirmed Becerra on March 18, 2021.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) appointed state Assemblyman Rob Bonta (D) as attorney general on March 24, 2021.

Newsom said in a statement, "Rob represents what makes California great — our desire to take on righteous fights and reverse systematic injustices. Growing up with parents steeped in social justice movements, Rob has become a national leader in the fight to repair our justice system and defend the rights of every Californian.”[2]
