I'm a first time candidate and first generation college graduate. I've lived in Wilmington for the majority of my life and raised my two children here. I studied criminal justice, Spanish, and public administration at UNCW, where my son is currently a junior. My daughter graduated from App State at the age of 19. I'm invested in and understand New Hanover County and plan to spend the rest of my life here. My background is a roadmap for how to prepare to be the Register of Deeds. I've worked my entire life in nonprofits, served 7 years at UNCW in Diversity and Inclusion, held the position of Director of Operations, and managed many offices. I've effectively managed volunteers, university students, and employees. I'm currently gaining experience in title searches and will soon complete UNC's Register of Deeds course. I'm uniquely prepared to bring this well rounded lifetime of experience to address social, operational, and managerial issues in this office.
  • The fact is people are consistently being discriminated against at the ROD office, year after year. I've heard countless firsthand stories of experiences. I will require and enforce exceptional customer service for every single community member regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender identification, nationality, age, ability, or sexual orientation. I have the experience and drive to transform that office into one that serves all of our community members.
  • We have an heirship problem. When people pass away without a will or trust, often the property goes to multiple heirs. This can result in deterioration of those properties, families unable to keep generational wealth in their families, and surrounding diminishing property value. I plan to collaborate with attorneys to bring low cost wills and trusts workshops into the community.
  • I will act as an advocate for the maintenance of standardized forms for recording, safeguards to protect property owners, suggest legislation, and bring awareness to the public about how they can benefit from the ROD office. For example, storing a veterans' DD214 at the ROD office in case of flood, fire, or other unforeseen event can make the difference between obtaining a VA loan or not.
There have been incidences of home deeds being suddenly put into strangers' names. Today, there is a notification homeowners can opt into when there is any activity regarding their deeds. This is currently our only safeguard. There is current legislation introduced to change this opt in feature to an automatic opt in with the ability to opt out if a homeowner desires. This is a next step in finding solutions to protecting homeowners.
The first and most important thing I want to know about any candidate is their motivation for running, which automatically speaks to their character. I am a candidate whose first thought is, "How can this office be used to address current needs of our community in a way that benefits the most?" Every challenge has a solution when we have the will and determination to creatively find a way.
I worked in a veterinarians office in high school for about a year! It was a messy, hairy, and slobbery job but also so much fun. I learned a great deal about responsibility and the importance of healthcare.
