As a mother of a Hispanic student with dyslexia, I have a deep understanding of the challenges and needs within our educational system. My professional background is in finance and includes an MBA, which equips me with the skills to manage operations and make data-driven decisions effectively. Additionally, my active volunteer work demonstrates my commitment to the well-being and education of children. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to our district, address its challenges, and ensure that every student receives the support they need to succeed.
  • Support for Special Education: Advocating for better resources and programs for students with dyslexia and other learning differences, promoting curriculum that addresses diverse learning needs to make RRISD truly equitable and diverse.
  • Funding and Equitable Management: To ensure funding across all schools, particularly those serving students with special needs, I advocate for reducing disparities and guaranteeing high-quality education. This involves properly managing funds to navigate financial constraints while providing necessary resources.
  • Academic Success: Maintain a goal of achieving a 90% graduation rate by closely monitoring career, college, and military readiness. Ensure all students have access to the resources they need to graduate prepared for their next steps. Also, work to increase participation in advanced coursework, as currently only 3% of students with special needs have access to these opportunities.
Mental Health: Encourage the expansion of mental health support for both students and teachers, particularly those facing academic or emotional challenges. Commit to creating a safe and respectful learning environment where all students can focus on their studies without distraction. Every student deserves a learning experience that supports their well-being and academic success.
I look up to individuals who exemplify dedication to public service and transformative leadership, such as Nelson Mandela. His unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and reconciliation in the face of immense challenges serves as a powerful example of how resilience and principled leadership can effect meaningful change. I admire how he championed education and equality, advocating for systemic reform and bridging divides. Following his example, I strive to embody these values in my own work, aiming to make a positive impact by advocating for equitable policies, fostering inclusivity, and leading with integrity and compassion.
To understand my political philosophy, I would recommend the book "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream" by Barack Obama. This book offers a comprehensive view of principles such as hope, inclusivity, and the role of government in addressing societal issues. It emphasizes the importance of pragmatic solutions, empathy, and working collaboratively to achieve common goals—values that resonate deeply with my approach to public service and educational advocacy. Additionally, if you're interested in understanding the intersection of finance and public policy, "The Road to Serfdom" by Friedrich Hayek provides insights into the balance between economic management and individual freedoms, which can complement a broader understanding of effective governance.
For a school board candidate, essential characteristics include integrity, empathy, and transparency in all decisions to build public trust. Accountability is crucial, as the candidate must be responsive to feedback and answerable to the community. Empathy is important for understanding and addressing the diverse needs of students, parents, and staff. A commitment to public service should drive decisions, prioritizing the well-being of students and educators over personal or partisan interests. Strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective leadership are vital for fostering collaboration and addressing challenges. Transparency in decision-making and dedication to equity and inclusion will ensure fair and supportive educational environments for all students.
I believe the qualities that would make me a successful officeholder include strong leadership and communication skills, a deep commitment to public service, and a proven ability to manage and analyze complex information. My background in finance and data analytics equips me with the skills to make informed, strategic decisions. Additionally, my dedication to inclusivity and empathy allows me to effectively address the diverse needs of the community. My experience as a mother and volunteer demonstrates my ability to advocate for others and work collaboratively towards common goals. These qualities, combined with a strong sense of integrity and accountability, would enable me to effectively serve and represent the interests of the community.
An elected school board trustee's core responsibilities include setting educational policies and priorities that align with the district's mission and ensuring the delivery of high-quality education. This involves overseeing the budget to ensure financial resources are allocated effectively and equitably, advocating for the needs of students, teachers, and staff, and ensuring that all schools within the district have the resources and support necessary to succeed. Additionally, a trustee must engage with the community to gather feedback, maintain transparency in decision-making, and address any concerns or issues that arise. Upholding a commitment to equity, inclusivity, and academic excellence is essential to fostering a positive and supportive educational environment for all students.
I would like to leave a legacy of meaningful, positive change in education, characterized by equity, inclusivity, and excellence. My goal is to ensure that all students have access to high-quality education and support, regardless of their background or needs. I hope to be remembered for fostering a collaborative and transparent environment where community voices are valued, and for implementing policies that promote student success and well-being. Ultimately, I aim to contribute to a school system that empowers every student to reach their full potential and prepares them for a successful future.
The first historical event I remember from my childhood is the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster in the 1980s. I was around 6 years old at the time. This tragic event, which involved the explosion of the shuttle shortly after liftoff, left a lasting impression on me as a young student interested in science and space exploration.
My very first job was selling vitamins and other nutritional supplements in the mall. I worked there for over 2 years, where I gained valuable experience in customer service and sales. This early role helped me develop skills in communication and understanding customer needs, which have been foundational in my professional journey.
One of my favorite books is "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. I value it for its inspirational message about pursuing one's dreams and listening to one's heart. The story's emphasis on personal growth, self-discovery, and the journey to achieve one's true potential resonates deeply with me. Its blend of simplicity and profound wisdom offers encouragement and reflection, aligning with my own values of perseverance and finding meaning in one's endeavors.
If I could be any fictional character, I would choose Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series. Her intelligence, resourcefulness, and dedication to helping others make her an inspiring figure. Hermione’s strong sense of justice, combined with her commitment to learning and problem-solving, aligns with my own values of perseverance and advocacy. Plus, her ability to balance academic excellence with bravery and friendship makes her a well-rounded and admirable character.
The last song that got stuck in my head was "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles. Its upbeat melody and positive lyrics have a way of lingering in my thoughts and bringing a bit of sunshine to my day.
One significant struggle in my life has been balancing professional responsibilities with personal commitments, especially as a mother of a child with special needs. Navigating the demands of work, advocacy, and family life has required immense resilience and adaptability. However, these challenges have also provided me with valuable insights into the importance of support systems, effective time management, and the need for equitable resources. Overcoming these difficulties has strengthened my commitment to advocating for better support and resources for all families facing similar challenges.
In my view, the primary job of a school board member is to set educational policies and oversee the district’s budget to ensure that all schools have the resources needed to provide high-quality education. This involves making strategic decisions that align with the district’s mission, advocating for students and educators, and ensuring effective and equitable use of funds. Additionally, school board members should engage with the community to understand their needs and maintain transparency and accountability in decision-making processes.
As a school board member, my constituents are primarily the students, parents, teachers, and staff within the school district. Additionally, the broader community, including local businesses and residents who are impacted by the quality of education and school district policies, are also important constituents. It is essential to consider the needs and perspectives of all these groups to make informed decisions that benefit the entire educational community.
To support the diverse needs of students, faculty, staff, and the community, I would ensure equitable resource allocation across all schools, with special attention to underrepresented populations. I would advocate for tailored educational programs, invest in professional development for staff, and expand support services such as mental health and counseling. Engaging openly with parents and community members, and promoting cultural competency, are also key to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels respected and valued.
I will actively engage with various groups and stakeholders, including local businesses, non-profit organizations, parent-teacher associations, and community leaders. I will attend community events, hold regular town hall meetings, and establish open channels of communication to listen to concerns and gather feedback. Collaborating with organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, local advocacy groups, and cultural organizations will help address specific needs and foster partnerships that support educational initiatives. By prioritizing these interactions, I aim to create a strong network of support and ensure that the voices of all community members are heard and valued.
Good teaching involves engaging and effective instruction that caters to diverse learning styles, fosters critical thinking, and encourages student participation and growth. It is characterized by clear communication, well-organized lesson plans, and the ability to adapt to students' needs. To measure good teaching, I will use a combination of student performance data, feedback from students and parents, and classroom observations. Supporting advanced teaching approaches includes providing ongoing professional development, encouraging innovative teaching methods, and investing in resources and technology that enhance instructional practices. This ensures that educators are equipped to deliver high-quality education and continuously improve their methods.
I would like to expand the curriculum in several key areas to enhance educational opportunities and prepare students for future success. This includes introducing advanced technical training and apprenticeships to provide hands-on experience and career readiness in fields such as STEM, digital media, and skilled trades. Additionally, I would advocate for innovative programming such as project-based learning, coding and robotics classes, and interdisciplinary studies that integrate real-world applications. Expanding mental health and wellness programs, as well as offering more diverse elective courses, would also support holistic development and cater to a range of interests and career paths. These enhancements aim to equip students with practical skills, critical thinking abilities, and a broad knowledge base to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
First, I would advocate for increased and more equitable funding at the local, state, and federal levels, working closely with legislators and education advocates to address funding disparities. Second, I would explore alternative funding sources such as grants, partnerships with local businesses, and community fundraising initiatives to supplement traditional revenue streams. Third, I would implement rigorous financial management practices to ensure efficient allocation and use of existing resources, prioritizing transparency and accountability in budgeting. Additionally, I would engage the community and stakeholders in discussions about funding needs to build support and secure additional resources. These strategies aim to provide consistent and adequate funding to support all aspects of the educational environment.
My policies for safety in schools are driven by the principles of proactive prevention, comprehensive support, and community involvement. Proactive prevention involves implementing measures such as regular safety drills, secure campus protocols, and robust mental health support to address potential issues before they escalate. Comprehensive support includes providing resources for both physical safety and emotional well-being, ensuring that students and staff have access to counseling, conflict resolution programs, and emergency response training. Community involvement is crucial, so I would actively engage with parents, local law enforcement, and other stakeholders to create a collaborative approach to safety, ensuring that policies are effective and responsive to the needs of the school community.
I would expand access to on-campus counseling services, integrate mental health education into the curriculum and professional development, and establish support programs like peer groups and stress management workshops. Implementing early intervention systems and fostering open communication about mental health will ensure timely support and create a supportive environment where seeking help is encouraged and stigma is reduced.
Why did the scarecrow win an award?

Because he was outstanding in his field.
I would focus on reviewing and potentially revising policies related to equitable funding and resource allocation to ensure that all schools, especially those serving underrepresented communities, receive adequate support. I would also advocate for enhancing policies on mental health support by increasing access to counseling services and integrating comprehensive mental health education. I would also seek to update technology and remote learning policies to address disparities in access and ensure that all students have the necessary tools for success. Implementing policies that promote greater community and parental engagement in decision-making processes would also be a priority to ensure that all stakeholders have a voice in shaping the district's educational environment.
Currently, I am awaiting responses from several organizations and community leaders for endorsements. I am optimistic about their support and look forward to sharing those endorsements once confirmed. Their backing would significantly strengthen my campaign and reflect our shared commitment to enhancing education and supporting our community.
My ideal learning environment for students is one that is inclusive, supportive, and engaging. It features a safe and respectful atmosphere where diverse needs are met through personalized instruction and robust support services. Classrooms are equipped with modern resources and technology to facilitate interactive learning, and students are encouraged to collaborate and think critically. The environment also promotes emotional well-being, with access to mental health resources and a strong sense of community involvement. This holistic approach ensures that every student can thrive academically, socially, and personally.
Round Rock ISD's handling of the coronavirus pandemic involved adapting quickly to shifting guidelines, implementing remote learning, and prioritizing health and safety measures. However, there were challenges in maintaining consistent communication and addressing disparities in technology access and support for students and families. In the future, I would advocate for more robust contingency planning and clear, transparent communication strategies. Enhancing support for technology and internet access, as well as providing additional resources for mental health and academic recovery, would also be crucial to better meet the needs of all students and staff during crises.
I will organize regular town hall meetings and forums for open dialogue, establish effective communication channels such as newsletters and social media, and create opportunities for parent involvement through advisory committees and volunteer roles. I will also offer workshops on navigating the school system and addressing specific challenges. By actively listening to parent feedback and incorporating their input into decision-making, I aim to foster trust, enhance collaboration, and strengthen our partnership with families.
My preferred strategies for recruiting faculty, staff, and administration include offering competitive compensation and benefits to attract top talent, creating a supportive and inclusive work environment to retain employees, and investing in professional development opportunities for growth and advancement. Additionally, I would focus on targeted outreach and partnerships with universities and professional organizations to reach a diverse pool of candidates. Ensuring a thorough and transparent recruitment process, along with actively promoting the district’s commitment to education and community, will help attract and retain high-quality individuals dedicated to our students' success.
I believe financial transparency and government accountability are essential for effective governance and public trust. Transparency ensures that financial decisions and resource allocations are open to public scrutiny, preventing misuse and promoting responsible use of funds. Accountability means being answerable for decisions, maintaining integrity, and being responsive to community feedback. Together, these principles build trust, ensure effective resource use, and support a fair and responsive educational environment.
