Griffin earned a B.A. in education from the University of Florida. She worked as a middle school teacher in the district before joining the board. At the time of her service on the school board, Griffin and her husband, Kevin, had three children who attended district schools.[1]

The August 26, 2014, general election in Alachua County featured three seats up for election. Incumbent Gunnar F. Paulson faced and defeated challenger Philoron A. Wright in the District 3 race. Rob Hyatt and Jancie Vinson sought to replace Carol Oyenarte, who did not file for re-election in District 5. Hyatt won the vacated seat. District 1 incumbent April M. Griffin won re-election without opposition for a second term in the District 1 seat.
