An election to recall Dane County Circuit Court Judge Archie Simonson was held on September 7, 1977. Voters recalled Simonson.[1]
Recall organizers submitted 36,343 signatures. Of the submitted signatures, 35,319 were found to be valid.[2]
Recall vote
Six candidates ran in the recall election. Moria Krueger received 27,244 votes, Simonson received 18,435, Daniel Moeser received 15,250, William Smith received 8,446, Robert Burr received 5,190, and Worth Piper received 3,342.[3]
Recall supporters
The recall effort was initiated following remarks Simonson made during a juvenile sexual assault case. Simonson said, "This community is well known to be sexually permissive" and "It is really wide open and are we supposed to take an impressionable person 15 or 16 years of age who can respond to something like that and punish that person severely because they react to it normally?"[3][4]
The Committee to Recall Judge Archie Simonson organized the recall effort.[3]
