An effort to recall three of the five members of the Arizona Western College District Governing Board in Arizona did not go to a vote in 2021. Recall supporters did not submit petitions by the deadline on September 20, 2021.[1]
The recall effort began in May 2021. District 3 representative Dennis Booth, District 4 representative Olivia Zepeda, and District 5 representative Maria Chavoya were named in the recall petitions.[2][3]
Recall supporters
The recall effort was started by Robert Walker, who previously worked as the district's vice president of technology.[2] He said he was pushed out by the district's administration in April 2021.[4]
Walker said the board was not being proactive about addressing employee concerns. "The District Governing Board has been made aware that employees are discouraged by the college president from speaking to Board members directly and that those who go 'off script' during a Board meeting are subject to discipline or threatened with loss of employment," Walker said.[2]
Recall opponents
In response to the recall effort, the college released a statement, saying:[2]
“ | The college cannot participate in any election- or recall-related activity, and the employees of Arizona Western College serve at the pleasure of the voters of Yuma and La Paz Counties, driven by a shared mission of transforming lives through education and partnerships to create thriving communities.[5] | ” |
