Dustin McDaniel, the Arkansas Attorney General, rejected the name and ballot title proposed by the initiative's sponsor in July 2009.[1]
Jeremy Peterson, a resident of Fort Smith, was the sponsor of the measure.
Goal of initiative
The ballot initiative would have required the Arkansas State Legislature to:
- Provide a clear definition of “best interests of the child."
- Allow authorities to assess a fine, or charge, state Department of Human Services employees, or any mental health professionals, when a child is unnecessarily taken from a home, or parental rights are wrongfully terminated.
- Establish language in state law that promotes "the importance of the familial bond."[1]
