Two of the five seats on the Arlington Public Schools school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. Incumbent Nancy Van Doren and newcomer Tannia Talento ran unopposed and won election to the two seats. Incumbent Emma Violand-Sanchez did not run for re-election to the board.[1]

The Arlington school board consists of five at-large members who serve staggered four-year terms. The board is officially nonpartisan, though there is a history of candidates receiving party endorsements. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 8, 2016. Two seats were up for election in 2016.[1]

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was June 14, 2016. Residents must have registered by October 17, 2016, in order to vote in the election.[1]

Arlington Public Schools is located in Arlington County, Virginia.

Arlington Public Schools are located in northeastern Virginia in Arlington County. The county seat is Arlington. Arlington County was home to 229,164 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[8] The district was the 13th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 23,499 students.[9]

Demographics

Arlington County outperformed the state of Virginia as a whole in terms of higher education achievement in the years 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 72 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 35.8 percent of state residents. The median household income in Arlington County was $105,120, compared to $64,792 for the state. The poverty rate in the county was 8.5 percent, while it was 11.8 percent for the entire state.[8]
