Arne Carlson (b. September 24, 1934) was the Republican 37th Governor of Minnesota from January 7, 1991 – January 4, 1999.[1] When Carlson first ran for office, candidates affiliated with the Republican Party of Minnesota ran under the party name Independent Republican.[2]

Carlson was married first to Barbara Duffy, with whom he had three children, the oldest of whom died as an infant in 1966. He then married Joanne Chabot in 1977 and Susan Shepard in 1985. Susan Carlson kept her job when her husband became governor, making the Carlsons the first two-income First Family in Minnesota history. They had one daughter.[3]
