Arthur Spatt
Arthur Donald Spatt (b.1925) was a judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. He joined the court in 1989 after an appointment from George H.W. Bush (R). Spatt assumed senior status on December 1, 2004. His service officially ended when he died on June 12, 2020.[1]
Before joining the federal bench, Spatt served as an associate justice in the Appellate Division of the 2nd Judicial Department of New York.[1]
Education
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Spatt received his bachelor's of laws degree from the Brooklyn Law School in 1949.[1]
Military service
Spatt was a navigation petty officer in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946.[1]
Professional career
Spatt was a private practice attorney in New York City, New York, from 1949 to 1978 before serving as justice of the Supreme Court for the State of New York's Tenth Judicial District Court until 1982. Spatt was an administrative judge for Nassau County, New York, from 1982 to 1986 and associate justice of the Appellate Division of the Second Judicial Department for the State of New York until 1989.[1]
Judicial nominations and appointments
Eastern District of New York
Spatt was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York by President George H.W. Bush (R) on October 25, 1989, to a seat vacated by Henry Bramwell. Spatt was confirmed by the Senate on November 21, 1989, and received commission on November 27, 1989. Spatt assumed senior status on December 1, 2004. His service ended on June 12, 2020, when he died from complications due to blood cancer.[1][2]
He was succeeded in this position by Eric Vitaliano.
