Arthur Tarnow
Arthur J. Tarnow was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He joined the court in 1998 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton (D). Tarnow assumed senior status on May 25, 2010, and ended his service on January 21, 2022, when he died.
Early life and education
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Tarnow received his bachelor's degree from Wayne State University in 1963 and his Juris Doctor degree from Wayne State University Law School in 1965.[1][2]
Professional career
Tarnow was a legal instructor in the Law of Contracts and Torts at the University of Melbourne Law School in Melbourne, Australia, from 1965 to 1966. Tarnow was a clerk of court in the Michigan State Court of Appeals for Appeals Judges: the Honorable John Fitzgerald; the Honorable Louis McGregor; and the Honorable Timothy Quinn from 1967 to 1968. Tarnow was a lecturer in the Law of Contracts and Sales for the University of Papua New Guinea Law School until 1970. Tarnow served as chief deputy defender for the Legal Aid and Defenders Association of Detroit in Detroit, Michigan, from 1970 to 1972. Tarnow was a board member for Team for Justice in 1973 and a public appellate defender for the State of Michigan Office of the Public Defender until 1973. Tarnow entered private practice in the State of Michigan in 1974 and continued to practice there until 1998.[1][2]
Judicial career
Eastern District of Michigan
Arthur Tarnow was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan by President Bill Clinton (D) on September 24, 1997, to a seat vacated by Julian Cook as Cook assumed senior status. Tarnow was confirmed by the Senate on May 13, 1998, on a Senate vote and received commission on May 22, 1998.[3] He assumed senior status on May 26, 2010. Tarnow's service ended on January 21, 2022, when he died.[1]
