The election replaced Xavier Becerra (D), who was appointed as California's attorney general.[3] Democrats Jimmy Gomez and Robert Lee Ahn were the top two vote-getters in a primary field of 23 candidates and advanced to the general election. Gomez and Ahn competed in the runoff election on June 6, 2017, when Gomez defeated Ahn by more than 20 percent, 60.1 percent to 30.9 percent.[4] The previous two elections in the district have also featured a general election contest between two Democrats.[5][6][7]

Ahn and Gomez participated in a candidate forum on May 25, 2017, where they discussed the Trump administration, infrastructure, job creation, healthcare, and local issues. During the forum, Ahn emphasized his legal and business background and knowledge of Korean relations, while Gomez highlighted his legislative experience in the California State Assembly and endorsements from progressive organizations like the Bernie Sanders-backed Our Revolution. In the fundraising race, Ahn outpaced Gomez, raising $353,000 between April 1 and May 17. His campaign capital was boosted by an additional $195,000 personal loan. In the same time period, Gomez raised $327,000.[8]

Campaign themes

2017

The following issues were listed on Carmona's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Campaign Finance: The single most important issue hovering over our political system like a toxic cloud is how we finance campaigns in the United States. Billions of dollars are spent on our elections. Simply put: our campaign finance system is broken. We can’t allow the billionaire class and wealthy special interests to continue to control our governmental and political system. To return power to the people, we must pursue comprehensive campaign finance reform and an end to the era of Citizens United.
  • Economy: Wages for middle- and working-class families have been in gradual decline for the past four decades. In fact, the United States has the largest gap between the rich and poor of any developed nation even many developing countries. With the rapidly increasing cost of living, large portions of our Los Angeles communities are in dire need of living-wage jobs and opportunities to build wealth.
  • Education: The future of our nation will depend on ensuring that all our children receive the best education possible. This means supporting our families, expanding child care, fully funding our neighborhood public schools, ensuring full access to our universities and supporting the rights of our teachers.
  • Health Care for All: It’s time for the U.S. to join every major industrialized country on Earth and provide universal health care to all by enacting a Medicare for all, single-payer health care system.
  • Housing and Gentrification: Every family and individual has a dream of having a home to call their own. This dream is being severely threatened for large parts of our communities by out-of-control housing costs. Today, many families and individuals are unable to afford renting a home, much less buying one. This is displacing working families from their historic neighborhoods.
