Arturo Ferreras was a candidate for District 4 on the Anaheim City Council in California. Although Anaheim's city council elections are officially nonpartisan, Ferreras is known to be affiliated with the Democratic Party.[1] He was defeated in the general election on November 8, 2016.

District 4 was a new district in 2016. In 2014, voters approved a ballot measure to expand the Anaheim City Council in 2016 from four council members to six council members.[2] Starting with the 2016 elections, city council members were also selected in by-district elections rather than at-large elections.[2]

Ferreras is a priest at St. Matthew Ecumenical Catholic Church.[3] He studied in the Philippines at Saint Louis University, Baguio City and the Maryhill School and in Mexico at the Jesuit School of Theology.[3]

After earning his M.A. in theology at the Jesuit School of Theology, Ferreras volunteered with impoverished communities in Guatemala and Mexico before immigrating to the United States.[3] Since settling in Anaheim, he has been active in local community groups and causes. He has served as chairman of the Anaheim South District Neighborhood Council since 2011 and is a member of the Community Development Advisory Committee.[3] He was the recipient of Clergy & Laity United for Economic Justice's Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition Award for Faith, Justice, and Equal Opportunity in 2013 and a Congressional Recognition Award for Community Service and Dedication in 2015.[3]

Ferreras advocated for the city council's shift from at-large to by-district elections and against the rise of short-term rentals in the city.[4][5]

Campaign themes

2016

Ferreras' campaign website listed the following themes for 2016:[6]

I’m running for Anaheim City Council to bring real neighborhood representation to District 4. We need a councilmember who will put District 4 residents first. I have spent my whole life in service to others and want to continue to give back to my community on council.

I’m a neighbor and friend to many families in our district. I will listen to our residents, be accessible and will be a voice for South Anaheim. I want to ensure our neighborhoods are strong and that District 4 has the resources we need to bring quality jobs, safe streets and new opportunities to our community.

I pledge to walk every area in our district if elected, listen to the concerns of residents and bring them directly to the city council without delay. I want to be a partner to our community on council. As your District 4 representative, I will fight everyday to:

  • Ensure District 4 is receiving its share of improvement projects, including potholes, sidewalks, and other infrastructure repairs
  • Keep our streets and neighborhood safe
  • Bring new parks and open space to the district
  • Keep our city government open, responsive, and transparent[7]
