Vazquez announced his intention to challenge incumbent Justice Steven Hughes (D) for a seat on the Texas Eighth District Court of Appeals in the 2016 elections. Like Hughes, Vazquez is a registered Democrat. Vazquez and Hughes ran in a five-way primary race. Vazquez was defeated. No Republicans filed to run for Hughes' seat.[1]
