Mikkanen was nominated to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma by President Obama on February 2, 2011 to fill the post left by Terence Kern.[2] Obama commented on the nomination, stating, "I am proud to nominate these two outstanding candidates to serve on the United States District Court. I am confident they will serve the American people with integrity and distinction."[3]
Mikkanen was rated Unanimously Qualified by the American Bar Association. You can find his Committee Questionnaire available here.
In December 2011, Senators Tom Coburn and Jim Inhofe blocked him from the post, claiming they weren't consulted about Mikkanen's nomination before it was announced. There was no other explanation given.[4]
Mikkanen's nomination was returned to the president on December 17, 2011.[1]
