An effort to recall five officials from their positions on the city government of Asbury Park, New Jersey, was abandoned in August 2012.[1] The five officials targeted for recall were Mayor Ed Johnson and council members John Loffredo, Susan Henderson, James Bruno, and Kevin Sanders.
Background
Recall petitions were submitted on August 20, 2012. Recall organizer Duanne Small submitted 2,644 signatures each on petitions for Johnson, Loffredo, and Henderson. Due to a lack of signatures, recall organizers did not submit petitions for Bruno or Sanders. On August 21, City Clerk Stephen Kay rejected the petitions, saying there was not enough time to verify the signatures. Kay said that due to mandatory waiting periods, he would have only had two business days to verify the signatures and meet the September 13 county deadline for getting the recall on the ballot. Recall organizers say they plan to challenge Kay's decision in court.[1][2]
