|After five years in the classroom, Ashika sought broader change through public policy. She earned a Master's degree in policy, worked in program coordination at UT, and served as a childcare policy analyst in Washington, D.C. Most recently, she was Legislative Director for Rep. John Bucy, managing 86 bills focused on education, healthcare, and voting rights. Her work at the Capitol was rewarding but often involved fighting for equity and inclusion amidst numerous challenges.
Throughout her journey, Ashika's approach has always been shaped by her teaching experience, evaluating policy through the lens of her students' needs. Her unwavering commitment to community welfare has guided her from the classroom to the Capitol, and now to City Hall, where she aims to be an informed voice for District 10 and Austin. With her lived experience, teaching background, and policy expertise, Ashika strives to create a more inclusive, supportive environment for all.- District 10 residents are concerned about public safety, from unsolved crimes to slow emergency response times. I will focus on improving police academy training, addressing staffing shortages with better pay and targeted recruitment, and fostering positive relations between citizens and APD through a fair contract and community investments. Public safety needs a multimodal approach, so I’ll support fire, EMS, and police services. Reducing wildfire risk and improving emergency medical response are especially critical for District 10 and will be top priorities in my work on the Council.
- I will prioritize affordability through streamlined government processes, ensuring efficiency and accessibility for all residents. Supporting working families is key, which means improving access to high-quality childcare. I also believe in investing in preventative health and homeless services, making sure people get the help they need before crises escalate. Housing must be accessible and equitable, addressing affordability challenges in our community. Finally, I am committed to investing in generational communities, helping ensure Austin remains a place where families can thrive across generations.
- I will prioritize environmental protection with investment in public transit, urban trails, bike and pedestrian infrastructure and preserved green space amidst our growing city. Neighborhood resiliency is crucial, with a focus on wildfire prevention and flood mitigation to protect our communities, as well as creating more housing in our urban core to prevent sprawl. Transparency and investment in the health of Austin's watersheds, parks, and trails will ensure we preserve our natural resources. Additionally, I support making sustainability initiatives, incentives, and rebates widely available to property owners, encouraging environmentally responsible practices across the city.
