Biography
Burgemeister earned an undergraduate degree at Wake Forest University and a J.D. at the University of Colorado. She worked as a law clerk in Colorado's 7th Judicial District and as a court judicial assistant for the Gunnison County Court. Burgemeister went on to serve as a family court facilitator in the 7th District prior to her judicial appointment.[1]
Elections
2018
Burgemeister will face a retention election on November 6, 2018, if she chooses to seek a term beyond her initial two-year appointment.
2016
Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) selected Burgemeister as the next judge of the Gunnison County Court on September 16, 2016. Two other candidates were put forward by the 7th Judicial District Nominating Commission on August 30, 2016: Deputy 1st Judicial District Attorney Benjamin Sollars and private attorney Michael Vaughn.[2]
Selection method
Judges of the Colorado County Courts are each appointed by the governor with the help of a commission—except in Denver, Colorado, where judges are appointed by the mayor rather than the governor.[3] Judges are initially appointed to two-year terms and then run in retention elections for four-year terms afterward.[4] To serve on this court, a judge must be a qualified elector and resident of the county and licensed to practice law in the state. Some small counties only require a high school degree or equivalent but require judges to attend an institute to learn about county court duties.
