Ashley Landess is president of the South Carolina Policy Council (SCPC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy research and education foundation based in Columbia, S.C.[1][2] Landess was named president in 2008. Prior to being named president, she served as the SCPC's vice-president for public affairs from 1998 to 2008.[3] Former Governor of South Carolina Mark Sanford (R) called Landess "...a strong advocate for substantive government reform and holding the line on government spending."[4]

Career

Landess was vice president of public affairs for the South Carolina Policy Council (SCPC) from 1998 to 2008. In 2003, she was appointed by then-South Carolina House of Representatives Speaker David Wilkins (R) to the South Carolina Lottery Commission. She has served on that Commission since 2003. She was named to the South Carolina School District Consolidation Committee and to a health care task force by former Governor of South Carolina Mark Sanford (R). In 2008, Landess was named president of the SCPC. Of her appointment, then South Carolina Senate President pro tempore Glenn McConnell said that Landess "...was the right person...I have worked with Ashley for ten years, and I have always counted on her and the Policy Council to show leadership on the tough issues, and to stand up for taxpayers in this state."[4]

Landess was part of a team from the South Carolina Policy Council (SCPC) recognized in a 2003 floor speech by U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.).[5] As president, Landess has testified before the South Carolina Senate select committee on the Freedom of Healthcare Protection Act in South Carolina. Landess has given press commentary on issues such as South Carolina's proposed ethics law and Medicaid expansion in the state.[6][7] Landess has written articles for The Nerve, an investigative journalism project of the SCPC.[8]

Governor Nikki Haley (R), during her tenure as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, called Landess "...the conscience of the Assembly" and stated:[4]

Ashley Landess is one of the first people I call when I need substantive answers. She's also a tough leader, an expert on policy issues and a force to be reckoned with in Columbia. [9]
