Assistant U.S. attorney Nancy Torresen nominated to Maine's federal bench

BANGOR, Maine: Assistant U.S. attorney Nancy Torresen may become the next federal judge to join the United States District Court for the District of Maine after being nominated by President Barack Obama in early March.[1],[2] Torresen, if confirmed, will be the first woman to serve the District of Maine.[3]
Torresen attended Hope College and graduated with an B.A. in 1981, going on to receive a J.D. from University of Michigan Law School in 1987.[1] She joined the U.S. Attorney's Office in 1990. In 1994, she went to the Appellate Section of the Criminal Division of the Maine Department of the Attorney General. In 2001, she returned to the U.S. Attorney's Office. From 1988 to 1990, she worked at the law firm of Williams & Connolly in Washington, D.C. From 1987 to 1988, Torresen served as a law clerk to former U.S. District Judge Conrad K. Cyr.[3]
If confirmed, Torresen will take the seat on the bench previously occupied by Brock Hornby.[2]
Torresen's name was one of several presented to President Obama by Maine U.S. Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree. In response to the announced appointment of Torresen, they said, "The diverse screening panel we convened last year did a thorough job, and we’re pleased that the president has chosen one of the names we jointly forwarded to him for consideration. The next federal judge will play an important role setting the tone and priorities of the federal judiciary in Maine. Nancy would bring a fresh perspective and a breadth of experience and knowledge from her diverse legal background to the federal bench in Maine."[3]
Federal judges, who are appointed for life, earn a salary as of 2011 of $174,000 per year.[3]
