Attania Jean-Funny is a proud southern girl who was raised in the small community of Lake City, FL. She immigrated from Port-Au-Prince, Haiti with her father when she was three years old. Attania's biological mother passed away and never left Haiti but she credits her adopted mother and village for the fact that she never felt like a motherless child and being able to realize the American dream.

After graduating from high school with honors, she received a bachelor's and a master's degree in biology education from Florida A&M University. She also earned an Educational Leadership degree from Baruch College. This allowed her to have a rewarding career in the education field for over twenty years. Seeing her students go on to have productive lives is her greatest joy as an educator. During the 2018-19 school year, she represented North Clayton High School as Teacher of the Year. This was one of the proudest moments in Attania's career. Attania knows first hand that obtaining a quality education can change the trajectory of your life.

Attania continues her community engagement by serving on the Clayton County Board of Appeals. She was an executive board member of the Clayton County Education Association. She continues to serve as an advocate for education and community outreach.

Attania is the wife of John Funny, Jr. and the mother of a son, John, and daughter, Jordan.
  • It is imperative that a representative be present and engaged with the community they serve. An elected official is a servant to the community.
  • Advocate for the causes that will bring much needed resources to the community.
  • Your vote is your voice. It is important to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to participate in our democratic system.
Equitable Education Funding
-All students deserve a high-quality education regardless of zip code. Funding is extremely important for the reduction of class-size, resources for instruction, and teacher and school-level support staff salaries.

Healthcare Access
-Funding and access to COVID-19 testing and future vaccine.
-African American women are 3-4 times likely to die during preventable pregnancy-related complications. This issue must be combated with the same vigor and attention as health-related issues.
-The expansion of Medicaid is critically important to the well-being of our community.

Economic Development

-Building relationships between the business enterprises, the community, and the educational system must be a top priority for vigorous economic development in the Southern Crescent region.
I am fortunate to have had wonderful people in my community that I look up to. First, my parents taught me to have faith in God, a strong work ethic and that my opinion mattered. They were very supportive and engaged in the lives of my siblings and me. I work each day to be the best role model for my children and students.

Secondly, the tragedy of losing my birth mother could have changed the course of my life. God allowed me to meet so many wonderful ladies that filled in the gap when I needed them. They became second moms, mentors, big sisters, aunts, and close friends. I had a blessed upbringing and wish to share that joy with the young people I encounter now. I want them to know that the past doesn't determine your future. It's what you do in the present.
The characteristics that are most important for an elected official are high moral character, solution-driven advocacy, strong work ethic, critical thinking and knowing the necessity of community engagement.
I remember the NASA Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. I was in high school and remember this tragedy well. It was of particular interest to me because the crew consisted of an African American astronaut, Ronald McNair, and a school teacher, Sharon McAuliffe.
My father owned a tailor shop in our town. He was known as Jean the Tailor. On a side note, Jean is our last name but many people in the community thought it was Tailor. As a small child, I was always at the "shop." I assisted customers and did most of the cleaning. I expressed an interest to learn how to sew and became my dad's apprentice. I eagerly learned the craft and was eventually paid as an employee. When I wasn't at school, I was at work with him. I worked with my father all through middle and high school and continued sewing for my classmates in college.

My favorite book is I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Dr. Maya Angelou. I read her book in high school and gained a sense of empowerment when I was introduced to Dr. Angelou's world through her books and poetry.
Georgia's greatest challenge over the next decade will be to balance the recovery process from the COVID-19 pandemic. Georgia proudly boasts that we are the best state to do business. As we assist our businesses to rebuild, we must balance that agenda with the initiative of making sure we have a healthcare system that can meet the needs of our urban and rural communities.
