Audrey Spanko, candidate for Texas State Senate District 1 and a licensed social worker. She is from Mineola and has two degrees in social work from the University of Texas. For roughly a decade she worked for nonprofits helping families seeking medical care and basic needs support, and from 2016-2019 she worked in child abuse prevention for the Department of Family and Protective Services. She's seen the impact of ineffective Texas politics and is fighting for change.
  • Spanko identifies public education funding, access to equitable health care, and voting rights as her top priorities.
  • Spanko believes that without access to health coverage, health concerns go undiagnosed or untreated, often forcing individuals to miss work and lose wages because of severe but preventable health issues. She will fight to expand Medicaid coverage and income qualifications through the Affordable Care Act, which would increase the eligibility for hundreds of thousands of Texans.
  • Currently, about 75% of eligible voters in Texas are registered to vote, but over the last 20 years, no more than 60% of registered voters have turned out for an election. Texas makes it is too difficult to be an active voter in Texas. Spanko will work to increase voting rights of eligible voters.
The district is currently home to 134,000 individuals without health insurance and has the highest infant mortality rate in the state. I plan to fight for Medicaid expansion. Over 42,000 uninsured individuals in Senate District 1 would gain medical coverage if Texas expanded Medicaid. Expanded coverage also means women and children will have the coverage they need to seek life-saving medical services. Over the last nine years four rural hospitals have closed in District 1. Expanding coverage and insurance could help save other hospitals at risk of closing.

Currently, 54% of households in the district make less than $50,000 annually, forcing individuals and families to make hard financial decisions. I plan to fight for an increase to the state minimum wage to elevate all residents of the district. East Texans work really hard to support their families and they deserve to be paid a living wage.

As the daughter and sister of public school teachers, I feel strongly about the need for a thriving public education system that not only supports a high quality education for our kids, but also supports and encourages our public school educators who have dedicated their lives to the well-being of our children. I will fight to find solutions to increasing our public school funding.
