Recently, noise has surrounded our schools and the school board. On my journey to become the next SCPS district 5 board member I discovered much of the noise is unfounded. While there are many opportunities for improvement, SCPS remains a beacon of academic excellence. Our safety protocols are a model for success in the state and nationally. SCPS is the key economic driver to our region and the largest Seminole County employer. Our success is vital to our students, community and economy.
I believe in SCPS. I taught my children (3 SCPS graduates) and the students I’ve mentored when you believe in something you stand up and take action. I’m standing up and taking action to elevate my service to the students and citizens of Seminole County.
- Student success - every student, every school. We are the only A rated school district in Central FL. However, some of our students are falling through the cracks. We must identify students in need and work as a team - teachers, families and community to ensure each student acquires the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be a productive citizen. Of course, safety is a precursor to success. SCPS must continue to invest in comprehensive safety/mental health initiatives led by Sheriff Lemma, local police and community organizations.
- Boost pay and improve the work environment for teachers and support staff. SCPS has the most committed, qualified teachers and staff in our region. We need to treat our teachers and staff as the professionals that they are. Teachers and staff know they can count on me as an advocate. For this reason I have been endorsed by Seminole Education Association, Seminole County School Bus Driver Association, Seminole Education Clerical Association and Non-Instructional Personnel of Seminole County.
- Parents will always be the number one influence in a child's life. We must empower families with resources to be an engaged member of their child's education team.
I do my homework. Though I was the third candidate to enter this race I was the first to attend open budget workshops, committee meetings and policy discussions at the county level. I have met with voters, students, teachers, staff and district personnel to learn the specific challenges facing our district at this time and I am active in the classroom. I'm proud to share that my work has earned the endorsement of the Orlando Sentinel as well as teachers and staff.
