I am a public servant, educator and pastor who has made serving others my lifestyle. Currently, I am on the Mexico City Council and I have served as mayor of the city as well. Recently, I was the president of the Central Missouri Municipal League. I am also faculty at Lincoln University and a board member on the Missouri Association for Colleges of Teacher Education, In addition, I founded Anointed Life Saving Ministries, Inc. a 501(c)3 with a mission to be the bridge that closes the gap that exist from people from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. I am running to be the "good neighbor" who prioritizes the people she serves, rather than party politics.
  • I support public education and educators! I believe public education is the cornerstone of our democracy and we need to insure that a quality education is available to all.
  • Health care is a fundamental right and should be accessible and affordable, Rural health care and hospitals must become a priority of the state.
  • I believe in local control for our local governmental entities We the people, through our local government should be able to institute policies that directly impact our communities.
I am very passionate about policies that help our rural communities thrive. This is why I focus on education, rural health care and hospitals, local governments and independent family farms. These issues also include policies regarding infrastructure, broadband and the ability of constituents to have jobs that pay livable wages.

Candidate Connection

Ayanna Shivers participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on August 22, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Ayanna Shivers's responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1. Accessible, quality and affordable healthcare to all

2. Education
3. Livable wages and the rights of laborers[3][4]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am extremely passionate about education because I am an educator. I am also passionate about ensuring that the rights of all people are protected; the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is fundamental to who we are as a nation and it must be upheld. Unfortunately, there are people who believe this applies only to people who have your same beliefs. As a pastor, I realize I must respect all people equally. It is my duty to love and to live by an example. It is everyone's right to choose if they follow or not.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Ayanna Shivers answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

I look up to my parents. I have always admired my dad's ability to stand-up for his beliefs; to put others first; and to treat people with respect. I look up to my mother, because she exemplifies poise and grace.[4]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
The top characteristics/ principles that a public official should have, in this order are:

1. A servant's heart 2. To treat everyone fairly and with respect 3. Active listening 4. Courage to stand-up for what is right and in the best interest of his/her constituents instead of bowing to companies, PAC or parties that have invested in their campaign.[4]

What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
1. As an educator, pastor and city council person, I have made serving others my priority.

2. In my various roles I have had the opportunity to work with diverse groups or people and I have taught others how to respect people from various backgrounds. 3. As a school counselor and a pastor I have developed active listening skills. 4. Even when I was in elementary school, my dad encouraged me to advocate for myself and to not be afraid of standing up for my beliefs. He did not support me being disrespectful, but he taught me to be proud of who I am, and to realize it is a duty to be strong--especially when your actions can help others.[4]

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
The core responsibilities for someone elected to be a Missouri State Senator are:

1. Understanding you represent all of the constituents of your district and that it is your duty to serve them 2. Communicating with the counties and municipalities in your district 3. Being accessible and present 4. Sponsoring and supporting legislation that benefits the state and the district 5. Collaborating with other legislators and working with them to pass legislation that is mutually beneficial for rural and urban districts.[4]

What legacy would you like to leave?
The legacy that I would like to leave is that I demonstrated the love of Christ, by being a servant that showed love and compassion to all.[4]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
Jimmy Carter running for office. I was about 5 years old.[4]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Christmas, because it is the time I celebrate the birth of Christ; and it a special time to spend with family.[4]
What is your favorite book? Why?
Corrigadora by Gayl Jones because it emphasizes the power of the narrative and how it can impact the future; and ingrain certain beliefs.[4]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
I think it is beneficial. Personally, I have learned a lot about public policy and what needs to be considered when passing legislation by serving on the city council.[4]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
When I talk with constituents, they tend to be most concerned about healthcare.[4]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
One of checks and balances.[4]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
I believe in any environment it is important to build positive, working relationships with the people that surround you. This does not mean that you have to hang-out together and become best friends, but you need to know enough about each other to build the trust that is necessary for people to collaborate. That is the only way that Missouri will be able to live up to its motto: "Salus populi suprema lex esto" (The welfare of the people shall be the supreme law).[4]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Education

Appropriations Health and Pensions Seniors, Family and Children[4]

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
Yes, a senior citizen in my district shared about a gentlemen that she and another lady would allow to work to earn money for his health care. When she told me the story she was shaking and so upset. I could almost feel her pain. She shared that the gentleman was given the run-around on receiving medicaid. He was not trying to be a burden on anyone but he needed help to pay his medical bills and get treatment for his condition. After being sent to several doctors in multiple locations he was finally approved. After being approved, he died a day or so later. Our health care system has to be improved![4]
