MONTGOMERY: Alabama: Alabama has seven U.S. House seats on the ballot in 2012. All seven incumbents are running for re-election, six of whom face a challenger in the general election (85.7%).
Two incumbent Republicans were targeted in their primary campaigns by the Campaign for Primary Accountability, a Houston-based super PAC seeking to oust longtime incumbents of both parties in primaries. Incumbent Republicans Jo Bonner of District 1 and Spencer Bachus of District 6 survived their primary challenges and advanced to the general election. Bonner now runs unopposed, while Bachus faces Democratic challenger Penny H. Bailey. This is the first Democratic general election opponent for Bachus since 1998.
In the District 5 primary, incumbent Mo Brooks faced a rematch in the primary with former congressman Parker Griffith. The two first met in the 2010 primary with reversed roles, Griffith as the incumbent and Brooks as the challenger. Brooks, having won the primary, went on to win election in November. Brooks once again defeated Griffith and faces Charlie L. Holley (D) in the general election.
Currently, the Republican Party holds six of the seven Congressional seats from Alabama. According to race ratings, no partisan switches are likely to occur, and all incumbents are expected to cruise to an easy victory on election day.
Polls are open in Alabama from 7 AM to 7 PM Central Time.[1]
