Hartford: Connecticut: There are 187 total legislative seats with 2012 elections in Connecticut, where polling places will be open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Eastern Time on election day.[1]
Heading into the election, the Democratic Party holds a 99-52 majority in the House and a 22-14 majority in the Senate. Both chambers are considered unlikely to swing in the 2012 elections.
Of the 187 incumbents up for election in 2012, 163 (87.16%) of them are running for re-election. A total of 153 of 187 (81.82%) districts will see more than one major party candidate in the general election.
Here are a few races to watch:
Senate
- District 4: A SuperPAC called Voters for Good Government has spent nearly $40,000 in advertising opposing Democratic incumbent state senator Steve Cassano and urging voters to vote instead for his Republican challenger Cheri Ann Pelletier.[2]
- District 19: Incumbent Christopher Coutu (R) faces challenger Catherine A. Osten (D) in the general election after abandoning his congressional campaign. Coutu faces an investigation as to whether he improperly used money from his aborted congressional campaign for his state senate race and failed to keep proper expense records.[3] Among the allegations is that the Coutu for Senate campaign wrongfully took a contribution from the congressional campaign by accepting lawn signs valued at more than $2,300 and failed to report certain expenses and reimbursements.[4]
House
- District 19: Jon Landry (R) faces incumbent Brian Becker (D) in the election, but is not running a campaign. Landry was nominated as a placeholder candidate to avoid losing his party's slot, and for several months it was unknown whether Becker would face Landry or run unopposed in the election. Landry will appear on the ballot and said he would represent the district if elected, but never ran a campaign.[5]
