CARSON CITY: Missouri: There are 110 total legislative seats with 2012 elections in Missouri, where all polling places are open from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM Central Time .[1]
The State Senate with 34 seats is currently under Republican control, 26 to 8. 10 incumbents, 8 Republican and 2 Democrats, are retiring from the Senate this year. The 163-seat House of Representatives is 105-54 in favor of the Republicans with 4 vacant seats. Of the 44 retiring incumbents, 28 are Republicans and 16 are Democrats. Both chambers could potential change hands in this election.
Of the 176 incumbents up for election in 2012, 122 (69.3%) of them are running for re-election. A total of 89 of 180 (49.4%) districts will see more than one major party candidate in the general election.
Here are a few races to watch:
Senate
- In District 1, incumbent Jim Lembke (R) faces challenger Scott Sifton (D). Lembke won the seat by 70 votes in 2008, and Sifton is a current Representative from the area who survived the conservative wave in 2010, promising to make this a tight race.
House
- In District 135, newcomer Casey Clark (D) is one of the top new Democrats and challenges incumbent Lincoln Hough (R). If the Democrats want to regain some of their seats lost in 2010 they will need to win districts such as this one: urban and suburban districts with high concentrations of moderate swing voters.
