CHARLOTTE, North Carolina: There are 170 total legislative seats with 2012 elections in North Carolina, where polling places are open from 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM Eastern Time.
Both the Senate and the House are solidly Republican, and neither chamber is expected to flip.
Of the 170 incumbents up for election in 2012, 126 (74.1%) of them are running for re-election. A total of 97 of 170 (57.1%) districts will see more than one major party candidate in the general election.
Here are a few races to watch:
Senate
- District 46 incumbent Wes Westmoreland did not run for re-election. In the general election, John T. McDevitt (D), Warren Daniel (R), and Libertarian Richard C. Evey will vie for the seat.
House
- District 3: This open seat is being contested by Robert B. Cayton (D) and Michael Speciale (R).
- District 12: This seat is currently open, and George Graham (D) will try to fend off challenger Jim Dancy (R) to keep the seat for Democrats.
- District 20: Incumbent Dewey Hill (D) is not running for re-election, leaving newcomers Tom Gale (D) and Rick Catlin (R) to fight for the seat.
