SALT LAKE CITY: Utah: There are 91 total legislative seats with 2012 elections in Utah, where all polling places are open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.[1]
The State Senate with 29 seats is currently under Republican control, 22 to 7. 3 incumbents, 1 Republican and 2 Democrats, are retiring from the Senate this year. The 75-seat House of Representatives is 58-17 in favor of the Republicans. Of the 10 retiring incumbents, 9 are Republicans and 1 are Democrats. Neither chamber is in danger of changing hands this year.
Of the 71 incumbents up for election in 2012, 58 (33.9%) of them are running for re-election. A total of 70 of 91 (76.9%) districts will see more than one major party candidate in the general election.
Here are a few races to watch:
Senate
- In District 8, Josie Valdez (D) faces Brian Shiozawa (R) to claim the seat left open by the retiring Karen Morgan (D). Should Shiozwa win, the Democrats may drop to 5 seats in the 29-member body, their lowest number since the 1980s.[2]
House
- Republicans Johnny Anderson (District 34) and Fred Cox (District 30) topped a list released by the GOP State Caucus as most likely to lose their seats. Both are recent additions to the House and face tough opposition in districts that have been altered in the last two years.[2]
