Ballotpedia's Daily Brew

This week's question was, How many school board recall efforts has Ballotpedia tracked in 2021?

You answered: 128.
The correct answer was 90.

Ballotpedia has tracked 90 school board recall efforts against 233 school board members in 2021. This is the highest number of school board recall efforts we have tracked in one year. The next-highest year was 2010 with 38 recall efforts against 91 board members. These efforts include any instances identified by Ballotpedia where recall supporters began the process of recalling one or more school board members.

California has had the most recall efforts with 26 followed by Wisconsin and Arizona with 12 and 10, respectively. While some states require recall supporters to provide a reason for the recall, those three states do not. However, Ballotpedia has tracked the reasons cited for recall efforts whenever possible, finding that 57.8% have cited issues related to the coronavirus pandemic.

The chart below details how many recall efforts were tracked each year. The 2021 numbers were current as of December 10, 2021.

Note: If a recall effort spanned multiple years, it was counted each year.
