#FridayFact Answer

A recount this week in the election for District 94’s state House of Delegates seat in Virginia resulted in a tie between Shelly Simonds (D) and Delegate David Yancey (R) when a three-judge panel accepted a previously disqualified ballot. As a result, the election will be decided by lot on December 27. The last time a state legislative election ended in a tie was in 2015, when a Democratic incumbent and his Republican challenger drew straws to settle the results.

This week's #FridayFact asked: In which state did candidates tie that year? You chose from the following responses:

  • Colorado
  • Mississippi
  • Ohio
  • Virginia

The correct answer was Mississippi. In the 2015 state House election, incumbent Bo Eaton (D) and challenger Mark Tullos (R) both finished with 4,589 votes. Eaton was selected as a winner when both candidates drew straws, but he was later removed from the chamber after the Republican majority voted to disqualify five votes in the election and seat Tullos instead.
